Q: What is Becoming The Crown Jewel?
A: Becoming the Crown Jewel is a weekend conference sponsored by a group of women from Effingham and Savannah churches. We held the 8th conference in 2011, which has become an annual event.
All girls search for love and acceptance. This conference is designed to show them how that love is waiting for them in Jesus Christ and cannot be filled by any man, fashion or friends. That love is only possible by the true romancer himself, Jesus. The conference is designed to teach girls about royalty, purity and loyalty in their commitments to Christ. The girls will also be encouraged to find and treasure their true beauty in God's eyes and forsake the approval of the world as they seek to become God's crown jewel. Click here for more information about the individual talks and to see clips from last year's sessions.
Q: Who can participate in Becoming the Crown Jewel?
A: Girls who are currently in 6-12th grade are encouraged to attend. The conference runs from Friday through Sunday. Large group sessions on the topics of Royalty, Purity and Loyalty will be held. The girls will then be divided by ages and placed with a trained counselor for small group sessions. The registration fee includes 2 nights lodging (for overnight participants), six meals, and snacks. In addition, all girls will receive a t-shirt and various other goodies. Full and partial scholarships are available upon request and upon a first-come, first-serve basis.
Q: Why is Becoming The Crown Jewel so important?
A: The Becoming The Crown Jewel Conference is important because it is designed to teach young women about God's desire for their lives. In a world full of sin that manipulates girls into seeking approval from guys, peers, and Hollywood, they need a positive influence in their lives to give them the true message from Christ. By taking a weekend to focus on God's plan for their lives, they can redirect the path of their futures by making a commitment to stay royal, pure and loyal to the God who loves them. In addition, these girls will also learn about true beauty and what is beautiful in God's eyes. Throughout this weekend retreat, girls will learn to value themselves as a precious jewel of their King. They will learn the true meaning of self-esteem and will see more clearly their own value and self worth, as they grow more royal, pure and loyal throughout their lifetimes.
A: It is held annually, usually in March or April, at the Savannah Baptist Assembly in Guyton, Georgia. The 2012 conference is scheduled for March 23-25, 2012!
Q: How much does it cost? What does the registration fee cover? Will I need any spending money?
A: The 2012 fee for Day-Only participants is $65, and the fee for Overnight participants is $80. The fee covers lodging (Overnight only), six meals, t-shirt, and all conference activities and materials. You may want to bring spending money because we always have a Lifeway table set up with CDs, books, and other resources available for purchase. We also usually offer Crown Jewel merchandise available for purchase.
Q: I can't afford to go. Do you provide financial assistance?
A: We have a limited number of scholarships available. You must complete and submit the scholarship application with your registration form to request a full or partial scholarship. Please see the Register page for more details.
Q: How can I join the staff as a counselor, speaker, or staff member? Are staff members paid?
A: You can join the staff by attending planning meetings and submitting a staff, counselor, or speaker application. You must also obtain and submit a clear criminal background check to be allowed to work the conference. Staff members are volunteer positions and are required to pay a staff registration fee to cover the cost of their meals, lodging, and t-shirt.
Q: I am an adult youth leader. Can I attend with the girls from my church as a chaperone?
A: We ask that churches within 50 miles of Guyton, GA do not send chaperones with their girls (unless you join our staff). Our staff is trained, experienced, and has been part of the planning process for six months prior to the event. If you are bringing a group from more than 50 miles away, you are allowed to bring up to two chaperones. Chaperones are subject to the same policy regarding background checks and registration fees as our regular staff. Chaperones are allowed to participate in conference activities, except that they may not sit in on small groups.
A: Please contact our founder and director, Danna Jones, to discuss this in more depth.
Q: Can you bring the Becoming the Crown Jewel Conference to my church in another city/area?
A: At this time, our conference is held at a retreat center in Guyton, GA. Our staff comprises 30-40 local women who meet for six months prior to the conference to plan and pray. Our staff members are volunteers and do not do Crown Jewel full-time. We are not structured for traveling. However, God is always moving and shaking our conference and we never know what He has for us in the future! :)
Q: Is Becoming the Crown Jewel a nonprofit organization?
A: We are working on becoming an official non-profit organization right now. We hope to be finished with the process by fall 2012. Donations to Becoming the Crown Jewel are not tax-deductible currently. However, we already function as a non-profit organization. Our staff (including our director, speakers, and counselors) are volunteers, and any leftover monies from registration fees each year roll back into the Crown Jewel bank account for future conferences.
